Arab Media Forum for Environment and Development

The Dialogue for Development National initiative, “Media and the Culture of Democracy: Dialogue for Development” was a project that successfully conducted a series of national media consultations in Egypt organized and led by AMFED between 2007 and 2008. The initiative was designed to enable the Egyptian media to take an active role in supporting greater democratization, good governance, and reform policies.  Based on a series of six nationwide media consultations, the project sought to enhance dialogue and strengthen the culture of democracy by raising awareness on key issues among media practitioners and stakeholders.

• Provide a forum through which the Egyptian media can enhance dialogue and exchange information to allow for a positive change in attitudes and provide informed perspectives to the Egyptian people that will support constructive and sustainable reform in the country
• Build the capacity of AMFED as an independent and committed media NGO in its efforts to support the development of an enabled and empowered media that facilitates the provision of critical information and that assists citizens in making responsible and informed choices, particularly with regards to their civic roles, responsibilities and participation

• Create a constructive dialogue among media professionals and stakeholders with regards to reform policies and the culture of democracy
• Build the capacity of AMFED to become a strong network of media professionals working towards creating this dialogue as well as towards supporting a freer media that advocates on behalf of the media sector and the general public on development and democracy issues
• Enhance the capacity of a broad base of media professionals working in both the Egyptian broadcast and print mediums to provide comprehensive information to the general public on pivotal issues related to reforms and democratic liberalization; and to support greater public participation in this process and in governance

• Support the creation of an enabling environment for political and social reform as well as for democratic political processes
• Enhance collaboration between a responsive government and an informed citizenry
• Promote knowledge of democratic practices  and civic participation among the general public
