In 2000, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan called for development of what is now known as The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA). Initiated in 2001, the objective of the MA was to assess the consequences of ecosystem change for well-being of humankind and serve as the scientific basis for action needed to enhance the conservation and sustainable use of those systems and their contribution to human well-being.
In 2005, AMFED organized a media seminar on the MA vis-à-vis the Arab region in collaboration with the World Resources Institute (WRI), The Board of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, the United Nations Environment Programme - Regional Office for Western Asia (UNEP-ROWA), the League of Arab States and the Egyptian Society of Writers on Environment and Development (SWED). The media seminar provided an overview of the main findings of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment with a particular focus on its work regarding drylands and desertification, and the work that was undertaken in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Morocco.
